Don't use lots of different fonts.
Choose one font (many web designers use Verdana) and stick to it.
Don't use lots of colours.
Choose a colour scheme with two or three colours at most that work well together.
Don't show off. If you've learnt a skill or discovered moving graphics, don't use them just for the sake of it.
Don't use sound unless you really, really have to.
Keep it simple. Some of the most popular websites are the most simple. One or two colours, plain white background, a few graphics – look at Google for example. In web design it is often true – “more is less”. The more flashy graphics, different colours and different fonts you include, the less impact you will have!
GET READY FOR THE SEARCH ENGINES
We'll look into search engines a bit later, but while you're designing your site, you need to make sure that Search Engines such as Google will like it. This is called “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO). There's a whole science to SEO which we don't need to go into here. But a few simple measures at the design stage can help. The first thing we need to consider is “keywords”. These are the important words that need to be on your site. If you are a driving school you need the words “driving school” to be on your site. You'd be surprised how many sites don't! You need to think “what words will people who will want to find my site type into the search box”. Obvious keywords will be “driving lessons”, “driving tuition” “learn to drive” etc. Use these keywords more than once on your webpage, but only in a natural style and not repetitively. Also think of the area you cover. If you cover Leeds, don't just say “We cover the whole of Leeds and surrounding areas” but list them out. If you also cover Castleford – say so!
Search engines like text and they ignore graphics. The more genuinely interesting and relevant text you have, the better. Remember that if your driving school name is in a graphics logo at the top of your page, the search engines won't see it! So make sure you repeat the name in the text.
