3. Choose your web design package. Websites are created using a “language” called html. (Actually there are other website languages but html is the most common and is the place to start). Effectively, html tells the users browser what to display on the page. Now you can get by with little or no knowledge of html by using web design software that allows you to create a page in WYSIWYG format (what you see is what you get) and it then creates the html code for you. There are many software programmes available. Dreamweaver is considered by most people to be the best, but it's the most expensive and there are cheaper adequate options around.

4. Choose a graphics programme. You probably already have one on your computer. You will need this to change the shape, size, colour of any graphics you want to use. Start designing your pages. You need three basic skills

• An eye for design. Your site must look good.
• An ability to write concisely and clearly and using good grammar!
• Some technical ability to use the software, upload your pages and to know what to do if things go wrong!

If you haven't got these skills find someone to help you. You want the best website you can get – a poor website is worse than no website!

Oh and you need plenty of time!

Sketch out the design of your site on paper. Decide whether you need more than one page. Ask yourself what are the essential things people need to find when they come to your site eg the area you cover, your phone number, any unique selling points you have and make sure these are clear and prominent.
